The Louisiana Territory usually refers to the vast area purchased from France in 1803. It consisted of all the land drained by the Mississippi- Missouri River complex.
Some would say that The Territory of Louisiana was created by the US after the Louisiana Purchase in 1805 and was renamed the Missouri Territory in 1812.
