Longer piece: 3x + 3

Shorter piece: x

(x) + (3x + 3) = 7

4x + 3 = 7

4x = 4

x = 1

Longer piece: 3x + 3 = 3(1) + 3 = 6

Answer: 1 ft and 6 ft
